Esplana Bible Formula and Kelsey Eccentric Existence

THE ECCENTRIC FORMULA: ESPLANA BIBLE FORMULA AND KELSEY ECCENTRIC EXISTENCE The Integral Connection of "The Bible Formula" by Periander A. Esplana and "Eccentric Existence" by David H. Kelsey Central Idea: “Eccentric” Formula Human life does not have its center within itself. The center lies outside us: in God’s relation to us. Therefore, we understand what a human is only by understanding how the triune God relates to us. Three Divine Relations That Define Humanity Esplana and Kelsey structure their entire system around three ways God relates to human creatures : 1. Created by God the Father through the Word (Genesis 1:1) Humans are finite, contingent creatures. Our existence is shaped by embodiment, time, limits, and dependence. This relation answers “What are we as creatures?” 2. Reconciled by the Trinity (1 John 5:7) God draws humans into healed relationship through Jesus Christ. This ...

John Gill: A Child Prodigy and Autodidact Polymath

John Gill, D. D. The Baptist Encyclopedia , 1881      John Gill, D.D., was born at Kettering, Northamptonshire, England, Nov. 23, 1697. His father, Edward Gill, was a Baptist in the membership of a union church composed of Presbyterians, Congregationalists, and Baptists, in which, beside a Pedobaptist pastor, Mr. William Wallis, a Baptist was a teaching elder, with authority to immerse adults. As Isaac Backus found this system a cause of controversy and strife in New England, so it proved in Kettering, and Edward Gill, William Wallis, and their friends found it necessary to withdraw and form a Particular Baptist church. Edward Gill was elected one of the deacons. To the end of his life he obtained a good report for "grace, piety, and holy conversation."      His son John early showed uncommon talents, and quickly surpassed those of his own age, and many much older, in acquiring knowledge. Before he was eleven years of age, under t...

The John 17:3 Story

The Prince and the Kingdom: Defending the Trinity with Scripture and Illustration Many cults either overlook or intentionally distort key passages of Scripture to fit their narratives. One prime example of this is their frequent dismissal of John 1:1 while emphasizing John 17:3. This selective reading creates a fragmented understanding of the Bible and leads to a denial of the Trinity. To address these errors, consider an illustrative story rooted in Scripture. The Story of the King and His Prince Imagine a majestic kingdom where the King reigns supreme, sharing his rule with his only begotten Son, the Prince. This co-regency reflects the unity and equality of the Father and the Son, as seen in John 1:1: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” The Prince, who is both distinct from and equal to the King, embodies the essence of divine royalty. The relationship between the Father and the Son is further clarified in John 10:30, where Jesus d...

THE SELF by J. Hampton Keathley, III

A Biblical Concept of Oneself Introduction Every age has its own special characteristics and our age is no different. The apostle Paul warns that in the last days, men would be “lovers of self…rather that lovers of God” ( 2 Tim. 3:2, 4 ). In our day the concept of self image, self esteem and self love has become a hot topic and the subject of much discussion. One of the big debates going on today is the place of psychology in Christianity. A host of writers and theologians have criticized psychology for being self-centered, humanistic, ineffective, and anti-biblical. Others argue for the legitimate use of psychology maintaining it is a science and thus legitimate. In a recent article in  Christianity Today  entitled, “The Mind Doctors,” the author, a Christian psychologist, writes, “Few Christians today would say we need know nothing more about chemistry or physics than the Bible teaches. The same holds true for psychology, itself a science (p. 19,  Christianity To...
